Programme Venue

The EUDAT Summer School 2020 takes place at the Scandic Kajanus Hotel, Koskikatu 3 87200, Kajaani, Finland.

About the Scandic Kajanus:

Located in Kajaani, Scandic Kajanus is on a river and minutes from Kajaani Castle and Veterans Park. This hotel is within the vicinity of Paltaniemi Church.

 

 
 
 
 
 
Accommodation

During the entire length of the course, students will be accommodated in rooms at the Scandic Kajanus.

 

Accommodation costs:

Accommodation costs includes breakfast (4 nights at the Scandic Kajanus hotel; check-in 12 July 2020 / check-out 16 July 2020

  • Single Standard (incl. VAT), 86€/room x night

Lunches and accommodation costs for the nigths of Friday 16 July and Saturday 17 July 2020 are kindly sponsored by EUDAT.

Application

Early-career and students applying to the EUDAT Summer School 2020 should satisfy the following criteria:

  • Currently engaged in Bachelor, Masters, PhD or Postdoc studies;
  • Fluent English;
  • Programming skills
  • A good knowledge of Python (intermediate/advanced)
  • Disciplines (any computational scientific discipline is welcome)
  • Basic Linux commands
  • Personal Laptop

Applicants should also explain the relevance of their work in reference to the EUDAT activities, as expressed by the applicant in answer to the questions related to current and future benefits and follow-up activities. Applications will be evaluated by the EUDAT team according to the following criteria:

  • Area of interest (as broad a coverage of data management as possible)

  • The candidate background and experience - 30%

  • Alignment of current research to EUDAT vision (see below) - 35%

  • Impact of possible adoption of EUDAT services within research field - 30%

  • Letter of Recommendation  - 5%

  • Geographical balance (to establish a good geographical representation in the selection)

  • Gender balance (to establish a good gender balance in the selection)

Each criterion will be given a score between 1 and 5 and the score will then be weighted according to the above percentages. In cases where applicants have equal scores, gender and geographical balance will be taken into account.

Financial Contribution

A total of 25 attendees will be accepted.

Applicants have to cover the following costs:

  • Travel

  • Transports

  • Accommodation: 86€/room per night at the Scandic Kajanus (Accommodation costs includes breakfast and 4 nights - check-in 12 July 2020/check-out 16 July 2020)

  • 4 dinners

Costs covered by the Summer School Organisers:

  • all coffee breaks and lunches for all days of the training course
  • 1 Reception light dinner (12 July 2020)

  • 1 Social dinner

  • 2 night accommodation in Ukkohalla for the Swamp soccer championship (Friday 17 July 2020 & Saturday 18 July 2020)

  • Participation to the Swamp soccer championship

Due to the current COVID-19 situation the EUDAT Summer School 2020 "where data meets HPC" has been cancelled.

 

After a highly successful 2019 edition, EUDAT is ready to host the next summer School "EUDAT Summer School 2020: where data meets HPC" from 13-17 July 2020 in Kajaani, Finland.

If you are at the early stages of your career, or a student currently engaged in a Bachelor, Masters, PhD or Postdoc programme working within complex research environments, EUDAT Summer School 2020 is an opportunity you cannot miss.

This edition aims to strengthen the links required to excel in data and high-performance computing (HPC) even more, getting the participants geared up to manage and process data throughout the full, research-data lifecycle.
