EUDAT & RDM Summer School Application & Evaluation Criteria

EUDAT Summer School for data scientists and data management scientists 3-7 July 2017
OVERVIEW  PROGRAMME  VENUE  ACCOMMODATION  APPLICATION 
 

Early-career data scientists and data managers applying to the EUDAT & RDM Summer School should satisfy the following criteria:

  • Currently engaged in or have finalised Masters, PhD or Post Doc studies with a strong focus on data management, data science and/or data preservation 
  • Affiliation or project is based in Europe
  • Proficient oral and spoken English, to actively participate in the Summer School: all lectures and sessions will be in the English language
  • A good understanding of the UNIX command line interface (mandatory) 
  • Experience of programming (mandatory), preferably in python (recommended) - note the programming elements of the school will be taught in python.
 
Applicants should also explain the relevance of their work in reference to the EUDAT research data management services activities, as expressed by the applicant in answer to the questions related to current and future benefits and follow-up activities. Applications will be evaluated by the EUDAT Training team and a group of external experts according to the following criteria:
  • Area of interest (as broad a coverage of data management as possible)
  • Alignment of current research to EUDAT vision (see below) - 40%
  • Impact of possible adoption of EUDAT services within research field - 30%
  • Alignment of Research Field with Horizon 2020 Vision  - 25% (the applicant does not need to provide details; this will be judged by the evaluation panel)
  • Letter of Recommendation  - 5%
  • Geographical balance (to establish a good European representation in the selection)
  • Gender balance (to establish a good gender balance in the selection)
 
Each criterion will be given a score between 1 and 5 and the score will then be weighted according to the above percentages. In cases where applicants have equal scores, gender and geographical balance will be taken into account.

The EUDAT Summer School is kindly hosted by the Information Systems Laboratory (ISL) and Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), in Heraklion, Crete.
 
FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION
 
A total of 40 attendees will be accepted and two different scholarships are being offered:
  1. FULL SCHOLARSHIP – COVERS TRANSPORT / TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION AND OTHER COSTS (AS DETAILED BELOW) COSTS FOR THE 10 HIGHEST SCORING APPLICANTS
  2. PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP – COVERS ACCOMMODATION AND OTHER COSTS (AS DETAILED BELOW) – TRAVEL COSTS ARE TO BE BORNE DIRECTLY BY TRAINEE
  • Hotel accommodation: accommodation costs including breakfast and dinner will be covered for a maximum of 6 nights at the Summer School chosen hotel. 
  • Other costs: all coffee breaks and lunches for all days of the training course and 2 social events will be paid by EUDAT.
  • Transport (For full scholarships only): 
  • Air / Train – Return economy fares; where possible please make use of lower cost and/or special offers. 
  • Public Transport – Wherever possible we recommend using public transport; costs for travelling in taxi can be compensated in special cases which must be clarified beforehand. 
  • In accordance with reimbursement rules you will be expected to pay transport costs in advance and submit a reimbursement claim including all original documentation immediately after the event. 
  • No other expenses will be reimbursed. It is recommended that attendees purchase their own insurance, i.e. a health insurance.
Note: in all cases attendees will be required to pay the costs in advance and will be reimbursed by Trust-IT Services Ltd. (EUDAT Communications Manager) upon receipt of all documentation. Specific reimbursement guidelines and templates will be provided.
