September 2026 marks the start of two new Horizon Europe projects, EOSC Mesh and EOSC4ALL, that will expand the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Federation. We are delighted to announce EUDAT will be a consortium partner in both. Both projects were funded under the HORIZON-INFRA-2025-01-EOSC-01 call, with the vision of ensuring a smoother onboarding process for the researchers and institutions to join EOSC and to connect across disciplines and borders.

EOSC Mesh: connecting thematic and e-infrastructure Nodes

EOSC Mesh,coordinated by the EGI Foundation, just held its Kick-Off meeting during the EGI Conference in Ghent (Sept 21-Sep 25, 2026). It will run from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029 with an EU contribution of €9.59 million. The project starts is focused on tackling the data access points for the research data and services, share and reuse across disciplines and borders in Europe. To address this, it will establish and enrol seven federating Nodes interoperable with the EOSC EU Node. These cover biobanking, environmental research infrastructures, social sciences and humanities, scholarly communication, high energy physics and e-infrastructures. The Nodes will offer 25 Federating Capabilities, along with more than 2,600 tools and services and 1,700 datasets. The project also plans a service adoption programme with open calls and seven cross-node international use cases.

EUDAT is one of the federating Nodes, forming the e-infrastructures Node together with the EGI Federation. Through this Node, EUDAT will bring its research data services and expertise into the EOSC Federation. 

 

EOSC4ALL: lowering the barriers to becoming an EOSC Node

EOSC4ALL is coordinated by the GÉANT Association and runs from 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2029. It has close to €8 million in funding. The project will deliver the GÉANT Digital Research Environment (GDRE), a managed platform offered as a service and compliant with the EOSC Node Reference Architecture. On this platform it will deploy six production-ready EOSC Nodes (SWITCH, DeiC, HEAnet, Pro-M, Cynet and GÉANT). It will also deliver the Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructure (AAI) and Enterprise File Sync and Share (EFSS) federating capabilities, so that Nodes can join them easily. Business and sustainability plans and a training programme, including "Train-the-Trainer" modules, are also planned.

EUDAT is one of the project partners, alongside GRNET, CERN, NORDUnet, SURF, OpenAIRE, HEAnet, SWITCH and others. 

Looking ahead

Both projects were introduced among the newly funded initiatives at the fifth annual coordination meeting of Horizon Europe EOSC-related projects in Brussels in July 2026. With a role in both, EUDAT continues to help build a federated, FAIR research data ecosystem in Europe. Stay tuned for updates as the projects get underway.
